With the Apple Watch months away and Android Wear now a reality, smart watches have been inspiring designers, Kickstarters and gadget lovers for some time. It doesn’t look like this is going away and the Span Smartwatch is one of the best examples of what could be achieved.
The concept from Box Clever features a what looks like a normal watch face with an OLED display across the middle to display notifications. To get around the fact that it would obscure 3 and 9pm, the watch has two separate dials for hours and minutes. The hours go from 1 to 12 across the top half and the minutes go from 0 to 60 across the bottom. At the 1 o’clock position there’s a date field so this really covers all the bases.
Tasteful and intuitive, Span provides only the most crucial alerts and notifications on its curved OLED display—the watch is intended to be used in tandem with a smartphone, not act as its replacement. Made of polished stainless steel and sleek black ceramic, Span’s interface is navigated with a jog dial on the bezel. Span’s jump hour timekeeping operates on a quartz movement; the digital components can be recharged with a micro-USB charging port concealed in the back of the watch.
